Michael Phelps was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on 18 September 1943. After service in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Senior Military Policeman-Combat Defense Forces during the Viet Nam War, he returned to Indianapolis. He was married on 2 July 1964. After living in Los Angeles for one year and Chicago for two years, he relocated to New York City where he lived for fifteen years. Relocating to Miami, Florida in 1972 to escape the harsh winters of New York, he became the Administrative Assistant and later Individual Co-Trustee of a multi-million dollars trust for Count Tassilo Szechenyi (an Hungarian Noblean). After the Count's death in 1988, he was engaged as Chief Investigator for a prominent Miami Law firm, specializing in criminal defense. There he worked on several high-profile cases, including two high-profile murder cases.
While working with the law firm, he co-authored "DAVID JANSSEN-MY FUGITIVE" with Ellie Janssen, first wife of the late Golden Globe winning, Emmy Nominated actor of film and television, most noted for his starring role as "THE
FUGITIVE" (ABC Television, 1963-1967). "DAVID JANSSEN-MY FUGITIVE" is the only authorized biography of David Janssen. The book was originally released in hardcover, December of 1994, with paperback editions released in 1995, 1996 & 1997. The book sold in excess of 1.2 million copies worldwide. Mr. Phelps released the Fourth Edition (Updated) in Hardcover in July of 2010 at the
original 1994 publication price. The Paperback Edition was released in 2014.
With the success of this book and retiring from the Law firm, Mr. Phelps embarked on the challenging career of being a Writer. He chose to write novels based on true crimes. His debut novel, "THE EXECUTION OF JUSTICE" is based on the murder of his close friend and one-time mentor, Detective Sergeant Jack R. Ohrberg, Robbery & Homicide Unit of the Indianapolis Police Department. This novel introduces his readers to the "Mike Walsh Detective Novels".
Mr. Phelps released the second in the "Mike Walsh Detective Novels" series, "THE JOCKEY'S JUSTICE" which is based on a murder case Mr. Phelps investigated for the law firm.
Mr. Phelps had been urged for years by many friends and fans of David Janssen to write of his personal friendship with the iconic actor. His four and one half years journey into the past with David came to an end in October of 2014. Mr. Phelps released "DAVID JANSSEN-Our Conversations: Volume One-The Early Years (1965-1972) and Volume Two-The Final Years (1973-1980).
